GUIDE / SIZING

What Size Building Do I Need?

Almost everybody who regrets a purchase in this category bought too small. Here is how to size it properly the first time.

Start with the largest item

Measure the biggest thing going in, then add walking room on the side you need to reach it from. A riding mower needs clearance to turn, not just to fit.

The common sizes and what they hold

  • 8x10 and 8x12: garden tools, a push mower, bikes, seasonal storage.
  • 10x12 and 10x16: a riding mower plus workbench space, or general storage with room to walk.
  • 12x20 and up: workshop territory, or storage plus a vehicle or trailer.
  • Anything at 14 feet wide or more starts to work as a genuine shop or living space.

Add a margin

A building fills up faster than anyone expects. If you are between two sizes, the larger one usually costs less per square foot and gets used.

Check it against your actual space

Use the Footprint Finder on any page. It only offers combinations we genuinely stock, and it draws the footprint to scale against a parked car so you can judge it properly.
